(De melodie die u hoort wijkt wellicht enigszins af van de melodie die u gewend bent. Wij laten u hier echter exact de oorspronkelijke muziek horen, inclusief de begeleiding, zoals die door Franz X. Gruber in 1818 op de tekst van Josef Mohr gecomponeerd werd. De melodie is in de loop der tijd aangepast en ingekort tot wat we nu kennen. Het is echter interessant om de oorspronkelijke prachtige versie ook eens te horen. Aanvankelijk bestond het lied uit zes verzen, zie de oorspronkelijke Duitse tekst.)
